Just a quick post to let people know that the second Forged in Battle 15mm Ancients kickstarter has started. I really like the figures I got from the first one they did (reviewed here) so I made sure to jump into this one as soon as it started. The first was Peloponnesian War, Punic Wars, Successors and Early Romans, this one covers the Legions of Rome, with figures available for Augustan Romans, 1st and 2nd C Romans, Dacians, Picts, Sassanids, Maccabeans, Early Franks, and Early Saxons, and I’m hoping for 3rd C Romans too (Andy hinted they would be available in the pre-kickstarter promo page), which would be perfect what with the incoming Aurelian game from Sam Mustafa.

So, if you’re in the market for some very nicely sculpted Roman legionaries and their assorted enemies, go and look at the kickstarter. Highly recommended.

Just a quick update to put up some pics of stuff I’ve been working on recently. Well, sort of recently. I did the artillery and cavalry a good few months back now, but only got around to gluing them to their bases this weekend. All of these are glued onto bases but otherwise unbased; as usual, I’m waiting until I have them all painted up and glued to bases before I do that, so that they’ll all be uniformly based. So, here to start are some Union cavalry for Longstreet. The figures are a mix of Cracker Line, Plank Road (the old Starfort line) and Pendraken. They fit fairly well – the Plank Road horses are distinctly smaller than the Pendraken ones, and the Cracker Line ones are roughly in the middle between the other two lines, but I mixed them up anyway.

All the cavalry!

All the Cavalry!

Managed to finally get these finished off and based (well, partly anyway). These are all 10mm Pendraken Zouaves with fez, both packs (shooting and advancing). The standard bearers don’t have flags yet – those are en route. At some point I’ll get a few more figures to make up two units of these since I need 8-10 for a unit. What I’ll probably do is get another couple of standard bearer figures and another 8-9 infantry figures so I can make another three bases which will give me 16 in total. That way, I can use a unit of 10 bases for a fresh unit, then when they get a little battle-hardened (ie they receive casualties and go down to 6 or so bases) I can bring in another unit of 10 bases as reinforcements. I haven’t completed the bases yet, just put down some wood filler (Hi Dave!), because I want to wait till I’ve got all my ACW figures done then base them all at the same time so they look the same. I hate doing armies piecemeal over several years, then forgetting / running out of the same base material and paints so that they don’t match.

Anyway, here’s the unit as a whole:

Zouaves!

Zouaves!

You can see why I gave this post the title I did, can’t you? The plain white of the wood filler basing and the red fez they wear makes them look a little like Santa’s little helpers at the North Pole.

I recently ordered some more figures from Pendraken, after learning that if you ask nicely, Leon will sell figures individually rather than in the packs they normally come in. Since their command packs come in bags of four sets of three men (officer, drummer, standard bearer), I hadn’t bothered to buy any – I don’t want that many command figures in the same poses, and I wanted two flags on each command base (regimental or state and national). When, after asking on the Pendraken forum whether it would be possible to get two flag bearers in each set instead of just one, I was informed that Leon would be ok with doing so, and so I put in another order.

I have to give credit where it is due: Leon at Pendraken did an amazing job. In the end, I ordered all sorts of bits and pieces from throughout the ACW range they do, a few figures here, a few there and so on. When I messed up the order (I put two of each officer, drummer etc down rather than one), he got back to me quickly and sorted it out, and seemed fine with me being a huge pain in the arse getting exactly which poses I wanted too. My hat is well and truly doffed to Leon, he does a great job of customer service. The shipping was amazingly fast too – I put in the order less than a week before christmas, and it arrived the day after Boxing Day. To get here so quickly from England is pretty good, but especially at the time of year too.

More 10mm ACW goodness

My order from Pendraken came through (thanks to Anthony at the club for doing a large order on behalf of several of us), so I have more l’il 10mm Union soldiers ready to fight for the cause. I ordered some cavalry and some Zouaves (one pack each of their firing and advancing line, both of which came with the same command figures). I have a few spare to make up some more bases, if need be, and with enough figures for two command stands, I could do two units, though I’ll probably only do one, and use both the standard bearers on the one base so I can have a state and US flag on there. I;’ve a feeling I’ll have to buy some more command stands so that I can have enough standard bearers for two per unit, though I may just convert some likely looking riflemen by cutting off the rifles and sticking flagstaves in their hands instead.

Sam Mustafa’s new game, Longstreet, which should be out sometime in mid to late 2013, is one of his Honour series of games. I have his older games, Grand Armee and Might and Reason, as well as his more recent games, Lasalle and Maurice, and like all of them, so it’s no surprise that I’ll be getting Longstreet as soon as it’s available. You can find out more about Longstreet here by the way: Longstreet

Since I don’t have any figures for it (all of my 15mm ACW stuff is back home in England), I figured I’d work on an army now, so that when it is released, I’ll have a painted and based army ready to go. I decided on Union (I just can’t get enthused about the Confederates, sorry – the same way as I’m not interested in playing the SS in WW2 or the fascists in the Spanish Civil War). Sam’s hints here and there, coupled with a few questions which he answered, mean that I have a rough idea of what I need to start with, and can build on it as time goes by.
