Just a quick photo-update of a couple of games I played recently. The first is a Bolt Action game in which Markus absolutely destroyed my Gerbil Herders, the second is a Maurice game in which my Marlenedietrichsteiners took out Ernie’s dastardly Rastenbergers.

I got a game in against Ernie last night, just a friendly one rather than a campaign game, but using our campaign lists. Since Ernie’s army is a little worse for wear at the moment, we decided that all his conscripts (a good proportion of his army right now) should be trained, that one of my elites would be trained, and since Ernie only has one notable, I’d only use one of my three (!) notables too. Given that the result of this game was a massacre, I dread to think how it would have turned out if we hadn’t decided on those changes…

This week I took on an old enemy, the French Armee du Nord, commanded by Markus at the club. I’ve noticed I play a lot of games against Markus (and next week I’m playing him again, an ahistorical match up of my English Hundred Years War against his Spartans (I think – one of his ancients armies anyway) using Impetus). It’s probably because he’s such a good opponent as well as a good friend; I can never rest on my laurels from previous wins against him, as he’s always learning my style and thinking of ways to beat me. With the match-up of these armies, however, I think we’ve found just the right combination of advantages and army lists that I’ve finally managed to confound him. We’ve played with these lists (well, mostly – I’ve added a new Notable, got an extra elite infantry unit, and Markus has several elite infantry units that were trained the last time we fought) three times now, and I’ve (spoiler alert for this game) won each time. After the game, we discussed what Markus could have done to avoid another defeat at the hands of my army, and we haven’t really come to any conclusions. We’re going to have a friendly match in a few weeks  so that Markus can test out a few new tactics without putting his standing in the campaign in jeopardy.

 

We started by drawing the Rugged card, which meant lots of hills. We ended up with 10 pieces of terrain, mostly hills, so that the initial battlefield looked like this on my right:

Had to postpone last night’s game; my wife had an appointment in the afternoon at the eye clinic to check on the progress of her surgery (which went well – her retina is now firmly re-attached), so instead of the battle report I was intending to post, here is the very last in my irregular series of Stuff For Maurice, and rather than my l’il men, it’s the l’il buildings that make up the towns we use in the games. I have to admit I went a little overboard when I started buying buildings and I have enough for at least 12 urban bases, when I’m only ever likely to use 2-3. I made bases out of mdf cut by DaveB at the club (Thanks  Dave!), covered with cobblestone paving paper I got from…where did I get it from? It was a while ago, and I can’t remember. It’s great stuff though, to scale for 6mm. My buildings are a mix, some from the now sadly defunct JR Miniatures (unless they’ve popped back up again – always a possibility), a few from Simply 6 (again, now sadly defunct, which is a crying shame because they did some of the best 3mm buildings (as well as these 6mm)  that I’ve ever seen. Others are from Hovels, which every wargamer knows about, but the majority of these are from Total Battle Miniatures, who (hurrah!) are not only still going, but are thriving, with new ranges being brought out recently.

After half a dozen failed attempts, I finally got around to playing Alex at the club for our Maurice campaign. There’s an in character write up of the battle here if you’re interested. This is the not in character AAR. We chose the terrain type (Plains) and having equal numbers of cavalry each, we had a straight die roll to see who would be choosing to be attacker or defender. I rolled a 1, Alex rolled a 6, and he chose to be the defender. That meant after we set terrain up, he had to place his forces first, defending the objective in the town. I then set up my forces, so that we had the following initial positions:

From left to right, I have 2 artillery, 3 cavalry in line one behind the other, then two lines of infantry, my elite grenadiers being the 2nd and 3rd in from the right on the front line. My commander was positioned between the ranks of infantry just next to the cavalry, and my Notable, Alain Comte de Finay commanded the first horse. My other Notable, the Rev. Howard Whitehouse, had a roving role. All units other than my two elite grenadier units were regular trained.

Here’s the final installment of my look at my Maurice army, which also bears a very strong resemblance to my Might and Reason Austrian army. This time, I’m going to be focusing on my irregulars – Grenzers and Hussars. Since this is the final installment, I’ll also be showing a picture of my command stands – Commander in Chief, Notables, Sub-Generals, etc.

First up are my Grenzers, who are Croatian light infantry from the frontier. As you can see from the basing, these are much more spread out than the regular troops I’ve posted pics of before:
